5 Ways to Show Gratitude to Your Feet

Thankfulness is in the air this month. At NY Foot Health, we want to remind patients to take time out from Thanksgiving prep to say “thank you” to your feet, those amazing structures that enable you to do all the shopping, decorating, cooking, and entertaining with family and friends for this festive holiday.

Let’s take a minute to remember just how incredible your feet are. They contain nearly a quarter of all the bones in your body (26 in each foot) and more nerves and sweat glands per centimeter than any other part of your body. They are also capable of withstanding 3-5 times the weight of your entire body when you walk or run. So, how about a show of gratitude to these podiatric wonders?

Below are five ways to give your feet a break this Thanksgiving:

1—Give them some TLC—don't forgo regular foot care just because you're busy. Now's a good time to give your feet something extra (spoiler alert: they'll feel better, and so will you!) Some ideas:

  • A 15-minute Epsom salt soak to relieve tension (this will also help deter ingrown toenails).

  • A professional pedicure.

  • A pair of moisturizing socks—these have moisturizers built right in, so the skin on your feet will stay supple and smooth.

2—Put them up—one way to avoid foot pain is to take breaks during busy days and elevate your feet if possible. This can help you avoid painful swelling as it improves circulation.

3—Take them shopping—a new pair of shoes—whether for exercise, walking, or dressing up--that fit properly, have good arch support, and a roomy toe box will be much appreciated.

4—Treat them to a massage—foot massages can help reduce pain and stiffness in aching feet. Plus, it just feels so good!

5—Stop ignoring them—one of the best ways to express gratitude to your feet is not to put off getting foot or ankle pain or another unusual symptom evaluated and treated. Taking care of podiatric issues in their earliest stages is the best way to prevent disabling foot problems. If you have a foot or ankle issue, contact your podiatrist for an appointment today. If you don't have a foot doctor, use our online directory to find one near you.
